‘Excuse me. If I can’t do the stunts, neither can the character’

New Waves of Musing

Maysoon Zayid is a Palestinian, female comedian with Cerebral Palsy.

She has smashed my assumptions. Plus she is funny.

Why is it we cast able-bodied actors to play characters with disabilities?

Is it that we don’t know which categories of judgement to use when we audition people with disabilities?

I don’t suppose these categories should be very different. Yet they are, automatically, and we flounder as to which ones are legitimate.

Note your first impression of Maysoon and then note your last impression. She shouldn’t have to fight against our assumptions, thankfully she does so expertly.
