Today I’m going to talk about one of my favorite things to do on this blog, movie novelizations.  If you read this blog, you know I love movie novelizations.  Especially movies from the 70s and 80s.  Today, I’m going to discuss the novelization of the zombie classic, Return of the Living Dead.

Return of the Living Dead novel

The history of this movie and its novelization is interesting in and of itself. I discussed it a bit when I reviewed the actual Return of the Living Dead movie. Essentially, John Russo who helped Romero write the original Night of the Living Dead movie, also wrote the novelization AND in 1977 a direct sequel book, Return of the Living Dead.  When Romero and Russo parted ways, they split the rights.  Romero went on to create his “of the Dead” movies and Russo went on to adapt his Living Dead sequel novel.  However, when…

The Incredible New David Bowie Remix of Sound & Vision.

david_bowie_1977

Sometimes good things can actually come from the commercialization of music, apparently. While working on the campaign for a smartphone, remixer Sonjay Prabhakar stripped away at the 1977 original from Bowie’s seminal Low album. What’s left are the naked and very personal Bowie vocals and piano, producing an eerie, startling effect that can only be described as deeply beautiful. It may be the best thing you hear today. Have a listen below.

Next Up: The Sot-Weed Factor

Sound good…

101 Books

I now begin a 700 page novel. I don’t know if I’m ready for this.

The Sot-Weed Factor is a “satirical epic” written by John Barth. It tells the story of Ebenezer Cooke, a poet laureate, on his travels from London to colonial Maryland in the late 1600s.

A few quick facts about The Sot-Weed Factor and John Barth:

Alice Munro Wins the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature

This just goes to show that you never give up . Nobel Prize at 82 in Literature, that is awesome.

Canadian writer Alice Munro has won the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature.

Munro, 82, has written over a dozen short story collections in her career. Most of her stories–composed in a mode of psychological realism reminiscent of 19th-century modernism—focus on the lives of people in a small rural pocket of Canada. Munro’s stories appear with an almost-alarming ubiquity, popping up every year in the big anthologies and the best magazines (Jonathan Franzen’s 2004 claim that “outside of Canada, where her books are No. 1 best sellers, she has never had a large readership” strikes me as odd).

For an appreciative and comprehensive look at her work, take a look at this guide at The Millions. For a contrarian take on Munro, read Christian Lorentzen’s essay in The LRB.

Or, better yet, make your own informed opinion by reading some of her stories:

NaNoWriMo: Are you Coddling your Characters?

Great information, I have a problem sometimes with my characters of forgetting no one can be perfect and have to force in some bitch.

Today's Author

It’s October, and I’d hazard that approximately half of the NaNoWriMo population is currently plotting their novels, while the other half is snickering behind their hands over the fact that they aren’t doing anything at all to prep for their novels. There is a long-standing argument over whether or not plotting or pantsing is the way to go, and let’s face it, we all tend to think the other side of the coin is wrong.

But, we’re all in this together, and whether or not you plot now, or you work yourself into a frenzy plotting while you draft, you will likely have to ask yourself this question: Are you coddling your characters?

Excuse me while I duck and cover behind this couch. I can practically hear the screams of, “No! I torture my characters!”

Do you, really? Or do you just think you do? There is a big difference.
